Brave and DuckDuck Go Block Google AMP

Brave Blocks Google AMP Pages, DuckDuckGo Follows Suit

It seems that the gloves are off when it comes to Google’s Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) project. Just a few weeks after Apple announced its plan to deprecate support for AMP in its Safari browser, Brave has now followed suit by announcing a new De-AMP feature. This will allow users to bypass AMP pages hosted by Google and instead visit content hosted directly on the publisher’s website.

Brave claims that AMP pages are harmful to both privacy and the state of the web, and that this new feature will help to minimize the opportunity for additional tracking and meddling to take place. It’s a bold move from the company, and one that is sure to ruffle a few feathers over at Google.

Not to be outdone, rival privacy software company DuckDuckGo has rushed to Twitter to reveal that its apps and extensions now offer similar functionality. However, the specifics of the implementation are not yet clear.

It’s shaping up to be an interesting battle between these two companies, and one that is sure to have a major impact on the future of the web. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops.

The Amazon Fire TV Sticks

Streaming sticks are also on sale right now, particularly on Amazon. Amazon is now discounting the older Fire TV Stick 4K, which comes with the third-generation Alexa control, by 50%. Normally $50, you can get one for $25 right now, the device’s lowest price to date. It’s not as powerful as the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (which is now on sale for $35 instead of $55), but it’s still speedy and supports Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, HDR10 Plus, and HDR10. Check out our review.

Amazon’s Fire TV Stick 4K comes with 4K Ultra HD, Dolby Vision, HDR, and HDR10 Plus support, as well as an Alexa-enabled voice remote that works with most TVs. Its audio output is also capable of Dolby Atmos, and it is compatible with Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Prime Video, and all of the main providers.

The new De-AMP feature will instead funnel web users to content hosted directly on the publisher’s website, minimizing the opportunity for additional tracking and meddling to take place. Google has not yet responded to Brave’s announcement. Not to be outdone, rival privacy software company DuckDuckGo rushed to Twitter to reveal that its apps and extensions now offer similar functionality, but the specifics of the implementation are not yet clear. DuckDuckGo’s move could be seen as an attempt to capitalize on the growing privacy concerns surrounding Google and its data collection practices. AMP pages are designed to load faster on mobile devices, but they have come under fire for a number of reasons, including the fact that they strip away certain features and functionality from websites. Google has defended AMP in the past, arguing that it is a necessary evil in order to improve the mobile web experience for users. However, it seems clear that not everyone is convinced.
